Next to the Textile Souk, in one of Dubai’s oldest buildings (built of mud and coral and wood beams circa 1935), Bayt Al Wakeel houses a maritime museum and a heritage restaurant with an outdoor deck rising over the lively Dubai Creek. Its authentic atmosphere draws crowds who enjoy Levantine and Emirati classics like lamb kebabs, seafood and citrus-splashed salads, and always finds them staying for the view. The deck is an ideal perch to watch abras and dhows glide over the waters while seagulls caw and swoop. If you look across the water you'll see the Burj Nahar, one of three historic watchtowers used to guard Dubai from attack by desert tribes. Order a fresh juice and imagine the city before skyscrapers sprouted and glamour ruled the day.
