Drinks & Nightlife

By day, hipsters hang out in the patio over beers and petiscos (Portuguese tapas) at this huge culture venue, which opened three years ago. On weekends, there’s often live music, whether a house D.J. or a funáná (music from Cape Verde) band performing in front of a tiger mural.

A welcome addition to the revitalization of the area, Topo sits atop a multiethnic commercial center, facing the popular Praça Martim Moniz. An elevator carries guests six floors up to the top of the building and delivers them to a chic indoor and outdoor space. Inside, a long wood counter acts as both dining table and cocktail bar. Outside, a terrace extends out into the Lisbon skyline, offering multi-level wooden seating spaces and spectacular city views. For snack and light meals, Topo has a menu featuring gyoza, chicken satay and alheira to start, Caesar salad and sandwiches of smoked pork belly, steak and tuna, as well as main courses of octopus friend rice, tuna or veal tartare and beef loin. The hamburger with gorgonzola, presunto and caramelized onion is, no doubt, also a crowd-pleaser. The bar features everyone’s favorite alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. A specialty menu features drinks connected by the respected Black Pepper and Basil cocktail masters.

Cervejaria Ramiro is THE place to eat seafood. There are better (and much more expensive!) places for sure, but few are as authentic as this one. The seafood is fantastic and always fresh. Just observing the frantic pace of the waiters as they try to serve the waiting crowd is a spectacle on its own. Great place for a Sunday lunch. Don’t be afraid of the queue, the quick service results in a high rotation.

Sightseeing

It was once one of the city's biggest secrets, but it has been discovered by tour guides and young couples. It offers a panoramic view of Lisbon, which is also observed by a small image of the Virgin that gives the place its name ("Our Lady of the Mount"). Behind the image is a small chapel from the 1700s, which is almost always closed. According to an old legend, pregnant women who sat on the stone chair inside would have a problem-free childbirth. This is one of the highest points in the city, so several monuments, identified on a tile panel, can be seen from here. This spot is especially popular at sunset, but during the day there are also those who stay for hours in the shade of the olive trees, cypresses and pines. To get here, walk down Rua da Graça from Largo da Graça, and turn left at Rua da Senhora do Monte.

This romantic pine-shaded terrace overlooking the city is a popular hangout for young groups, thanks to its kiosk café and fantastic views that go from the castle down to the river. Everyone calls it Miradouro da Graça, but the official name is Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, a poet who died in 2004 and who spent many of her days admiring Lisbon from this spot. One of her poems can be read on a wall facing her bronze bust, which is seen looking out to the city. Standing behind it is an 18th-century church, Igreja da Graça.

This is probably the most secret garden in Lisbon. Everyone in Lisbon knows it exists, has an idea where it is located, but most have never actually been there. The view from the garden is fantastic, as most views over Lisbon are. It’s divided in more lowered levels, one with a nice cafe, a children’s playground and another fountain. Although the garden is quite old, the 2000s restoration works gave it a new fresh air. Also, during summer, the bigger Fountain sometimes becomes a city beach. Another great sight you get are the surrounding XVIII and XIX charming mansions of the neighbourhood.

Arts & Culture

The Castelo de S. Jorge – National Monument occupies a privileged area of the old medieval alcáçova (citadel) and consists of the castle, ruins of the former royal palace and part of the neighborhood for the elite. The fortification, built by the Moors in the mid-11th century, was the last defensive stronghold for the elite who resided on the citadel: the Moorish governor whose palace was nearby, and the elite city administrators whose homes are visible today in the Archaeological Site.

Chapitô is situated in "Costa do Castelo" on a quiet, unassuming street. It's a large white building with giant pictures of circus acts hanging down from it. It’s a fabulous building. Built in the 17th century, it used to be a prison but now is used as a state funded school for circus performers. It is recommend a visit to Chapitô, even if only for a coffee or see their shows. The views are wonderful and the whole vibe is funky, quirky, bohemian and relaxed.

This peaceful garden on top of one of the seven hills is a space full of history over the centuries; it has served as a bullring, flea market (Feira da Ladra) and a vegetable market. Also had a fountain powered by one of the distribution galleries of the Águas Livres Aqueduct.
