Khaosan Road or Thanon Khaosan is a popular tourist street in central Bangkok, Thailand. It is located in the Banglamphu area about 1 kilometer north of the Grand Palace (Wat Phra Kaew) 'Khaosan' translates as 'milled rice', a reminder that the street was once a major Bangkok rice market. In the last 20 years, however, Khaosan Road has developed into a world famous 'backpacker paradise.” It offers cheap accommodation, ranging from 'mattress in a box' style hotels to reasonably priced 3-star hotels. Khaosan shops sell handcrafts, paintings, clothes and second-hand books, plus many useful backpacker items. Khaosan Road in recent years has become popular with local residents, especially artists and art students. At night, Khaosan is a lively street packed with tourists come to explore walking street and night life. There are clubs, bars, food stalls and shops open until 2 a.m. The area is internationally known as a center of dancing, partying, specially during the traditional Thai New Year (Songkran festival April 13-15), when water splashing festival turns into water fight. Khaosan also has a Buddhist temple under royal patronage. The centuries old Wat Chana Songkram is directly opposite Khaosan Road to the west while the area to the northwest contains an Islamic community and several small mosques.

One of the world's most famous red-light districts, Patpong is where it all started (Thailand's Go-Go culture). It has even been immortalised in a James Bond chase-sequence. Its two parallel side-streets, found between Silom and Surawongse Roads, house around 100 neon-lit strip bars offering naughty shows and the famous pole-dancing entertainment. Patpong has long since been usurped as the 'king of the scene' by Soi Cowboy, its counterpart around Sukhumvit. However, its reputation means it's still a huge attraction, mainly for sightseers more interested in ogling at - rather than indulging in - the carnal delights on offer. But while for men Patpong is likely to mean 'adult'.

Silom is undoubtedly one of the city's most important financial districts with many bank headquarters, financial institutions and office buildings. Fine hotels, smaller type malls and great restaurants abound in the area too - and then of course there's the famous nightlife scene of Patpong. Bangkok's two most sophisticated mass transportation systems - the Skytrain (BTS) and underground - both have Silom connections, which are also conveniently connected by the walkway between MRT Silom and BTS Sala Daeng stations. Siam, Chidlom, Ploenchit, Sathorn, and the riverside are only a few BTS stations away.

The opening of Sena Fest, the latest community mall in Bangkok, is not much of an event in itself as Bangkok is notorious for having a mall opening every month or so. What is newsworthy is that Sena Fest stands on the Thonburi side of the river, you know: 'the other side', where development is a lot slower than in frantic Siam or Sukhumvit. With 120 shops it's not gigantic either but it's well designed, attractive and colorful in a convenient location near luxury riverside hotels such as Millennium Hilton and the Peninsula Hotel. Most of all it's a bit of fresh air in an aging area.

Rot Fai Market (Train Market) in Bangkok is an authentic open-air bazaar selling an incredible array of vintage collectables and memorabilia from yesteryear, from antique furniture to hippy fashion and Mao kitsch. With three sections to this huge market space, there are also many traders selling modern fashion and apparel more typical of other night markets in Bangkok; however it’s the one-off and hard to find items that really make Rot Fai Market superior to all other night markets in the city. Where else in the Thailand would you find a pristine 1950s Cadillac next to vintage leather jackets, French chandeliers and 1960s action figures from Japan? Combine all this with cool restaurants,

Patpong is famous for its fake brands on sale, especially bags, trainers and watches. It is not cool like the rest in this list, but it is very popular and very downtown, hence, it is still packed with tourists every night of the week. Amphawa is the second most popular floating market near Bangkok, not as large as Damnoen Saduak but more authentic, with visitors almost exclusively Thai. Located 50 km from Bangkok this once small village was apparently already present in the mid-Seventeenth Century. The main draw is of course eating seafood grilled procariously on wooden boats moored around the famous central bridge, serving an appetizing array of huge prawns, shellfish and squid. Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha), or Wat Phra Chetuphon, is located behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and a must-do for any first-time visitor in Bangkok. It's one of the largest temple complexes in the city and famed for its giant reclining Buddha that measures 46 metres long and is covered in gold leaf. Wat Arun, locally known as Wat Chaeng, is situated on the west (Thonburi) bank of the Chao Phraya River. It is easily one of the most stunning temples in Bangkok, not only because of its riverside location, but also because the design is very different to the other temples you can visit in Bangkok. Wat Arun (or temple of the dawn) is partly made up of colourfully decorated spires and stands majestically over the water. Wat Arun is almost directly opposite Wat Pho, so it is very easy to get to. A must do when in Bangkok is to venture down to Chinatown for food. At the old market, you will find some of the city's best tasting and most reasonably priced fare. From the obscure (birds nest soup) to the ostentatious (Peking duck) to rare delicacies (roasted chestnuts), there will be something to enlighten your taste buds and provide a feast for the eyes.

Bangkok - Hualamphong Station (Krungthep) - Bangkok's Main Railway Station, Hua Lamphong Train Station, is a huge, extremely busy, steaming hot, hanger-like building with over 20 platforms, 26 ticket booths, an Advance-Booking Office, the usual distorted announcements, and two electric display boards. Hua-lumpong Station is in the center of the city with easy access to Chinatown, the Chao phraya River, Silom and Sukhumvit areas so you can save on taxi fares and travelling time. Hualamphong Station is on Rama 4 Road, 1 km West of Silom in the Pathum Wan district. Platforms in the station are crowded with luggage carts, piles of boxes and baggage, arriving and departing passengers.

Bang Nam Pheung floating market should probably be called a 'riverside market' as like many others it only has a few boats parked along the banks, with most of the stalls on solid ground. But with the success of the famous Damnoen Saduak or more recently Amphawa, this popular type of market is flourishing all over Thailand and every village near a river has its own version. Bang Nam Pheung is only few kilometres east side of Bangkok but it is not easy to find or to reach without your own transortation. Because of this it has remained relatively low-key and the proximity to Bangkok makes it a great way to step away from the hectic town and step right into village life.
