*OUR FAVORITE Three miles of golden sands stretching north towards Woolacombe and Morte Point and south towards Baggy Point make up Putsborough. It is one of the finest delightful beaches in the South west - the sea is inviting the surf of the highest quality and the surroundings are simply stunning. It is perfect for walkers and children due to the plentiful supply of rock pools to discover. Putsborough is on the south side of Woolacombe and being farther away from the hotels shops and cafes means that the beach is usually quieter than neighbouring beaches. Surfboard hire is available on the beach. It is truly a beautiful beach with all the facilities for a great day out. Putsborough, Georgeham, Braunton, Devon, EX33 1LB

Woolacombe is one of the finest beaches in the West Country and is a big favourite of surfers and families. The rolling surf brings unbroken Atlantic breakers from across thousands of miles of ocean to pound on this three-mile long stretch of golden sand. The sheer length of the beach means it is possible to find quieter places in the surf even at the height of summer. Easy access and three large car parks with space for 2000 cars means that Woolacombe beach combines magnificent natural beauty, excellent facilities and a wide range of activities for all ages. Life guards ensure safe family swimming during the summer. Woolacombe itself is a lively village with great pubs, restaurants and places to stay, and is a perfect base for a family holiday, surfing trip or stop-over when walking the South West Coast Path. Barricane is a picturesque cove tucked in between the rocks, famous for cowries and other exotic sea shells. Local folklore says that these shells have travelled off the shore of a Caribbean island thousands of miles across the Atlantic to be dropped in near-perfect condition in this precious little inlet on the North Devon coast. Approximately 400 metres north of the main beach, Barricane is great for rock pooling and popular among surfers. Despite the lack of lifeguards there are some good coastal walks towards Mortehoe and the water quality is excellent and is a short distance from the shops and car parks of Woolacombe. A historic fishing village with winding narrow streets and colourful houses, Appledore is full of maritime history and cute pastel houses. Characterised by its winding narrow streets and the colourful houses, the charming village of Appledore sits at the confluence of the Taw and Torridge rivers with lovely views across to Instow. Tourists and travellers will love the chance to explore by taking the seasonal ferry over to the neighbouring Instow for a day trip. Rich maritime history The village is built on a tradition of fishing and boat building which still continues today. For centuries, Appledore was an important shipbuilding centre for the region and the village’s large indoor ship yard continues to be a source of employment for many of the residents. Because of its long maritime heritage, the village is now home to the North Devon Maritime Museum. The museum, housed in a Grade 2 listed Georgian building, the former home of several of the village’s important ship owners. The museum has a wide range of exhibits detailing Appledore’s history, as well as the wider maritime history of North Devon, which includes Viking raids, WWII beach landings and ship building throughout the years. Appledore is a favourite location with locals and visitors alike, with it being a popular location since Victorian times. In fact, like many of the coastal areas of North Devon, it gained fame after being featured in a novel by Charles Kinglsey, who lived in Bideford. He described it as a “little white fishing village” and that description still stands today with the many pastel coloured buildings, jumble of cottages and the harbour lined with white terraces. You can quite easily spend a few hours wandering through the network of historic streets, taking in the traditional fishing cottages museums and independent shops, before indulging in some fine local produce at one of the many cafes, pubs and restaurants. The village is well known for the quality of the seafood, with salmon, cod, bass, cockles and mussels being popular choices. It isn’t uncommon to pop into an eatery for some refreshments to find fish and seafood that had been brought in only hours before. Haven for creativity As well as being famous for its maritime history and local seafood, Appledore has always been historically celebrated for its art and creativity. The town holds regular arts festivals and resident crafts people showcase a wide range of arts and crafts from ceramics, photography, jewellery and furniture among other products which can be picked up at independent stores and regularly held markets. Because of its artistic merits, Appledore is home to a number of popular annual events. The Appledore Book Festival draws visitors from across the country and features talks and activities with a range of acclaimed international authors. If you’re looking for family fun, try the Appledore-Instow Regatta, where you can cheer on the gig boat crews as they race along the quay or try your hand at crabbing and beach tug-of-war competitions! For those looking for a touch of adventure, Appledore is a great place to launch your own seafaring mission. You can find a range of boat and fishing trips, like the seasonal ferry over to Instow, head to the quay and follow the signs!

Hidden in the lichen-draped landscape of North Devon, Arlington is a surprise and a delight. The classical exterior of the Regency house gives no clue to what lies inside – an ornate yet homely interior boasting an Aladdin’s cave of collections, recently redisplayed to share the passions of the Chichester family including sea shells, model ships and pewter. Other highlights include a hidden masterpiece by William Blake and the beautiful Beauvais Tapestries. The National Trust Carriage Museum in the old stable block houses one of the most significant collections of carriages in the country, with over forty Regency and Victorian carriages ranging from grand state coaches to humble governess carts. Also on display are the gold Speaker’s State Coach on loan from the House of Commons and Queen Victoria’s pony phaeton. From the ever-changing display of flowers in the formal Victorian Flower Garden to the many varieties of fruit and vegetables in the Walled Kitchen Garden, Arlington looks beautiful whatever the season. The Victorian Flower Garden features herbaceous borders, basket beds filled with colourful annuals, and attractive fountain surrounded by arched trellises, beds of seasonal planting and banks of colourful azaleas. On the top terrace is a conservatory used to grow a variety of plants from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Behind this, the carefully restored working Walled Kitchen Garden produces fruit and vegetables throughout the year.
