Great sandwiches! Order a side potato/mac salad (not listed on the online menu) and you’re set for a great lunch. The deli is just to the right side at the entrance to Kihei Kai Nani. We usually call in our sandwich order before heading to the beach across the street.

Walking distance (2 complex over Kihei Kai Nani). If you’re craving curry, this is the place to go. If you like beef, add the braised boneless beef short rib to the curry dish. The beef is so tender that it falls apart with your fork. If ordering curry dish, don’t bother ordering fried rice. Just add a large side order of white rice and savor the rich curry! If not ordering curry, the fried rice is excellent! Not too expensive and decent portions.

Great super market to buy your groceries. Some prices may seem high, shop for items that are on sale. Make sure you inform the cashier/checkout person that you are staying at the Kihei Kai Nani to get the sale price. If your are craving “Poke” (raw fish and/or seasoned seafood) this is the place! Pick one or two items over rice and your lunch / dinner is set (all to go only). The poke counter is located at the back of the store, next to the refrigerated meats section. There is also a hot food deli near the front of the store (near the bread area) that has alot of local favorites - fast and inexpensive.

If you happen to be in Kahului (less then 10 minutes from the airport - main Maui Fire Station next block) and want Vietnamese, Korean, Mexican or Hawaiian Food, and not too worry about the ambiance, this is the place for inexpensive lunch or dinner. This nondescript shopping mall (with many closed stores) can get very busy during lunch hour or dinner hours as many locals go here to grab their fast meal for lunch or dinner. There are tables available to eat there or to take out. There are restrooms in the food court. Good variety for everyone in your group as your cravings dictate which restaurant to choose. If the locals go there, must be priced right!

Hiking

If you are in a mode to do some hiking, this is one you might like. Beautiful views on the way up and on top. The main parking lot fills up by 8:30am. If the lot is full, there is a overflow lot that is about 1/2 mile back down the road. You will need to bring water as it is a good hike going mainly up hill. There are steps in this hike. It's nice that no bikes are allowed on this trail. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/hawaii/maui/waihee-ridge-trail?u=i

If you are going to be in Makawao (up country) area and would like to do some hiking before lunch, this is a easy to moderate hike. It feels like you are in forest hike, no views. If you want quite, this is the place! You will encounter mountain bikers, people riding horses, people jogging, people walking their dogs, etc. The trail is long enough where everyone is separated and not busy feeling.

If you are thinking about bicycling and checking out Haleakala at the same time, check out the many Maui Downhill bicycle self tours or guided tours. The package may include a van ride up to the top of Haleakala to watch sunrise or mid afternoon ride down paved roads of Haleakala. Very little peddling is needed as it is mostly all downhill. Book early and save with advance pricing. I do not have a particular company to recommend. There are several companies offering packages of this bike tour.
