Food scene

Athens has many wonderful local restaurants and here are just a few of my favorites!
Celebrity Chef Hugh Acheson owns this restaurant. Upscale spot for creative, contemporary Southern cooking. "Five and Ten is, and always was meant to be a place to revel in great food and drink, and where the patron would, quite simply, be happy"

Mediterranean-style dishes created with seasonal, Southern influences, plus an extensive wine list. The idea behind The National is simple: to provide a casual neighborhood gathering spot reminiscent of the bars and cafés we’ve enjoyed on travels to Europe. Mediterranean inspired food and wine is served for lunch and dinner in the dining room and throughout the day at the bar. While our menu points to culinary traditions from abroad, we value our local farmers and our dishes reflect the changing seasons in Northeast Georgia.

In 1988 three young college students met in Athens and discussed the most pressing issue of the day – where to find truly great pizza? After much consideration the engineer said, “let’s build it”, the biologist said, “with the right ingredients”, the artist said “and make it look good” – and DePalma’s Athens was born! Over the decades the kernel of our endeavor was expanded until it encompassed the fuller concept that currently exists. With three locations, thousands of friends and family and millions fed over the years DePalma’s Italian Café stands today, still evolving and growing organically – the rarest of the rare, a truly multi-generational restaurant, a living breathing part of the community.

Seabear Oyster Bar merges high quality, innovatively prepared seafood with the warmth of casual bar fare. It’s meant to be a neighborhood place—intimate and unassuming. The menu includes new takes on retro classics made with foods sourced from sustainable, reputable purveyors. Although the menu nods to cuisines across the globe and American favorites, much of what is served will be both locally grown and seasonal.

Music Scene

Home of the Athens YMCA from 1889 until 1919, the original building on this site became a music store, movie house, hotel, Masonic Temple, furniture company and Sears Roebuck store before being replaced by the Elite Theatre in 1935. Except for a brief period as a Methodist church, this theatre – later renamed the Georgia Theatre – has served as a significant performance venue for emerging and established musicians from Athens and beyond. Devastated by a fire on June 19th, 2009, this historic concert hall has been rebuilt as a labor of love with reverence for the creative spirit that Athens has long embraced. With special thanks to the people of Athens and all who worked so diligently to restore her and make her better, the Georgia Theatre stands proudly reborn.”

The 40 Watt Club is a music venue in Athens, Georgia. Along with CBGB, the Whisky a Go Go, and selected others, it was instrumental in launching American punk rock and new wave music. The 40 Watt Club was the primary performance space for numerous "Athens bands", including Pylon, R.E.M., Love Tractor, Dreams So Real, Guadalcanal Diary, The Primates, Modern Skirts, and others. Its DIY ethos and informality were instrumental in the fostering of punk rock and a "scene" in Athens, GA. In more recent years, the club has been the home-base for such nationally renowned local bands as of Montreal, Reptar, Drive-By Truckers, and The Whigs.
