Pei et Mei has managed to strike the perfect balance between modern and traditional both in terms of food and atmosphere. I immediately felt at ease upon entering: exposed brick walls, Scandic decor details and a handful of tables overlooking the open kitchen make the space cozy yet slick. Foodwise, there are various set menus to choose from for dinner but If you find yourselves around noon in the area, go for the lunch tasting menu, which includes 3 different dishes and a glass of wine at a bargainous price.

BELGA is one of the most visited bars in Brussels and an architectural landmark in Place Flagey as it’s housed in a 1930s Art Deco building which used to serve as the headquarters of Belgium’s first national radio station. Situated just opposite the Ixelles Ponds (Étangs d’Ixelles), it has one of the biggest and probably sunniest terraces in Brussels which makes it a great spot for people watching. During the warmer months the terrace is always full of people having brunch or lunch, drinking beer or just soaking up the sun.

Unequivocal evidence that these fries are delicious is evident through a Facebook campaign from 2011 which saved Frit Flagey from shutting down. Instead, the owner of the friterie just moved it to another place, and the long queue moved to get a taste of those golden potato sticks, which seem to melt on your tongue. They are often titled (along with several others) as the best fries in the city.

On Wednesdays the main square (Place du Chatelain / Kasteleinsplein) turns into an open-air market, where locaL producers sell pretty much everything from fresh meat, fish and vegetables to cheese, bread, olives, candy and flowers. If you arrive around 14:00 when the market opens, you’ll be able to do your shopping at ease . The real attraction however takes place towards its closing when people make their way to the Chatelain market for after-work drinks (or an “apéro”, as the locals call it). The whole area comes alive as buzzing crowds gather on the square sipping wine or beer, tasting fresh oysters or nibbles from the various food stands and catching up with old and new friends.

Pin Pon is housed in an old fire station, so it’s no surprise that the decor has followed an industrial theme, reminiscent of the building’s history. The space is set up in different levels with the bar area on the ground floor, a wine bar on the mezzanine and the restaurant on the upper floor. The most striking feature of Pin Pon is the glass roof, which lets in abundant natural light. It’s really lovely to enjoy your meal or coffee while watching the flea market on the Place du Jeu de Balle and soaking up the sun! When it gets too warm though, the best option is to grab a table at their spacious terrace and enjoy a glass of Belgian beer.

Because it's one of the city's techno temples and the biggest names in the field (without exception) have DJ's there, le Fuse is a must for any decent, self-respecting clubber. The unique atmosphere that prevails there attracts those in the know, who come from far and wide. The end-of-the-night crescendos, as things approach hysteria, have become the stuff of near legend. There are also gay evenings on Sundays, as fiendishly good as they are famous on our continent. Supervised free car park and democratic admission fee before midnight.

A little disco-bar (400 people even so) in the heart of the Sablon district, frequented by a youth as smart and stylish as you could wish to see. You see some good DJs there too and, when they're in the mood, VIPs. A number of parties are held there at the end of the week. Open from 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday

If you are in the area of Saint Gery, Le Roi des belges is a nice bar where to have a drink. But the other bars around the place are nice too ! especially in the summer, where they all have big terraces in the sun !

It is a very cosy and small place for partying BUT they probably make the cheapest, yet the best cocktails (in shakers) in Brussels. What is cool is that for 10€ you can get two shakers instead of one and that applies all night. It is so cool, everyone dancing on the tables, chatting and having fun makes it a very very nice place to go out to!

Rebuilt after a fire in the Neoclassical style that Austrian rule dictated at the time, Brussels’ spacious Royal Square exudes grandeur to the fullest. The symmetrical building blocks that surround it and its central Godfrey of Bouillion statue include the Magritte Museum in the splendidly renovated Altenloh Hotel, the Saint Jacques-sur-Coudenberg Church, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts.

Parks & Nature

Tenbosch Park happens to be one of the most beautiful ones. No wonder it has made it into my “Best Parks in Brussels” list! Despite its relatively small size, Parc Tenbosch / Tenboschpark has a long history and many hidden surprises for visitors. Tenbosch Park remains lovely throughout the seasons but the best time to fully enjoy it is during spring and summer when it’s in full bloom and there are chaises longues available for free.

One of the most frequented spots by both locals and visitors in Brussels is the famous open-air antique market in Place du Jeu de Balle / Vossenplein. Located in the heart of the Marolles area, right opposite Pin Pon, the market is full of second-hand items, so be prepared for some serious treasure-hunting and a bit of bargaining! Open-air markets are a great part of life in Brussels? The Place du Jeu de Balle flea market brings together numerous merchants who sell all sorts of things from second-hand clothes and jewelery to props, ornaments and other curiosities.
