This small, local, family-run okonomiyaki restaurant may seem off-the-beaten-track but actually people from Kyoto will tell you it’s the best okonomiyaki in town. Whilst it isn’t going to win 5 stars for cleanliness the okonomiyaki is truly tasty. The condimental spicy sauce is also worth a try! When ordering either okonomiyaki or yakisoba (or yaki udon) you must specify which meat you want - pork, beef, seafood or motsu (tripe). 11:00 - 21:00 (last order 20:30) Closed: Mon & Tue Website: http://tabelog.com/en/kyoto/A2601/A260304/26001618/

This is a new café and bar to the neighbourhood, and definitely worth dropping-in for a lunchtime drink or bite to eat. In the evenings they appear to be a reservation-only bar, so probably best to do lunch instead of dinner. They have an interesting take on various sandwiches, pasta, snacks and their own cocktails too!

A short walk over the bridge sits a tasty little Thai restaurant that offers seating with a great view across the river. The food is superbly Thai and very reasonable.

Chishaku Council Hall is one of those places that are relatively famous (in Kyoto of course), relatively large, quite beautiful, and yet few people visit it. The temple is a major center of the Shingon sect and was very popular during the Edo period as a center for Buddhist studies and training. It is still the headquarters of about 3000 temples of that sect in Japan. Several rock and zen gardens of various sizes surround the temple buildings.

It has bloodstains on the ceiling from an ancient battle where Torii samurai family of Fushimi castle committed suicide after a defeat. The wooden floors from Fushimi Castle were moved here, where they were made into a ceiling. The bloodstained ceiling is still visible in the temple, and records from the period identify Torii's body/stains as well as those of his retainers.
