This recently-built, nearly hidden cottage in the woods (completed in June 2019) is perfect for a small family, two or three couples enjoying a lake vacation together, or several friends connecting simply to hang out. Located just off the 17th tee of Pomme de Terre's Shadow Lake Golf Course (open year-round, weather permitting), about a mile from the NW shores of beautiful Pomme de Terre Lake, and about 6 miles south of Lucas Oil Speedway.

Die Unterkunft
The Rustic Hideaway Cottage was designed to blend into its wooded surroundings, nestled in stands of mostly cedar and tall oak trees. Hard to spot from the road, it truly is the perfect little hideaway. Once inside, warm woods, brick tile, metal ceilings and wainscoting, various copper accent pieces, and a serene color scheme (mostly shades of dusty green with rich burgundy accents) welcomes you in and invites you to make yourself comfortable. The somewhat eclectic and rustic mix of furniture and decor, as well as personal touches and words of inspiration throughout, add to the homey feel of the cottage, abundant windows bringing in the natural light of the woods. And while the interior definitely gives off a rustic vibe, it is far from primitive ~ modern conveniences are at every hand.

At night, switch on the mini white lights in the corner trees for romantic ambiance. Or fire up the electric fireplace with stone surround and wood mantel that is the focal point of the living area. (In the warmer months, you can just enjoy the flames without the heat.) The main bedroom is furnished with a dramatic king-size, curtained canopy bed, and has extra large windows looking out into the wooded area that embraces the cottage. The twin room is a charmer, made to mimic the feel of a loft, with built-in beds on either side, under the "eaves," and the bed area is separated by draped linen curtains, making it as special as the king room. All linens are 100% cotton for your comfort.

The space is climate-controlled by a high-efficiency (and very quiet) Carrier heating & air conditioning split unit. For additional air circulation in the bedrooms, small portable "Vornado" type fans are provided. Kitchen is fully functional with microwave, apartment-sized refrigerator, 2 induction cook tops (along with the necessary cookware), large toaster oven, and a crock pot. Coffee and tea cart offers everything you need for preparing those comfort beverages. Conspicuously (but intentionally) missing is a TV, but an assortment of books, games, art activities, and puzzles is provided for the guests' enjoyment. Wi-fi is not available down at the cottage ~ there are so many tall trees that it is not even possible to get satellite signal. Also, cell service is marginal. Text messaging generally works, though. If Internet is required, guests may make the short walk down to the Main Cottage at the end of the road and access it from there (Caltons Cottages, no password required). Once out of the cottage driveway, cell service should be fine.

Just to left of the cottage lies a lovely patio area, complete with a fire pit & grate, benches, a picnic table, lighting, and landscaping touches. The steps leading down to the space, as well as the perimeter boundary and the fire pit, are made of natural stone that came from the property. A very pleasant place to gather day or night, and almost always shaded by the abundant trees that surround it.

Zugang für Gäste
The entire space is dedicated to guest use.

Weitere wichtige Hinweise
Smaller and mid-sized cars can easily navigate the circle drive through the trees. However, if your vehicle has a long wheel base, or if you are towing a trailer of some sort, you would do well to park it on the road at the top of the driveway, then walk down.

Some sort of home-baked delight will be awaiting your arrival. Check the coffee station for muffins, scones, cookies, or sweet bread that can be enjoyed your first morning in the cottage, or whenever you like! (Other goodies might be provided as well, depending on season and availability.)

A notebook filled with useful information about the area, restaurants, activities, etc., can be found in the copper magazine rack in the toilet area. Guests can locate a place to dine, find out where to rent a boat, learn about our golf course (which offers a $5 "Stay & Play" coupon per person for 18 holes and a cart), read a little history, look at a map of the lake, check out the Lucas Oil Speedway schedule, and any number of other interesting things. Please replace this notebook before you depart.

Check-in and check-out times are flexible, depending on whether others are booked just prior to, or just after, your stay. If you would like an earlier check-in or a later check-out, just ask and we'll check the schedule! Happy to accommodate you if at all possible.

Caltons Rustic Hideaway Cottage is located near the end of the gravel road (privately maintained and sometimes a bit rough) that runs through the small, quiet subdivision around the local golf course. Most of the lots are vacant, and in fact, there are only about a dozen homes total. Wildlife abounds!

Shadow Lake Golf Course is a well-maintained, beautiful but casual course with reasonable greens fees ($20-$35 a round, depending on season and day of the week, cart included). A short walk down to the clubhouse will get you started! In addition to golfing, the clubhouse also has a pay-per-game (cheap at 50 cents) pool table and a dart board. The clubhouse also offers simple snacks, pizza, hamburgers & hot dogs, and a variety of beverages.

Pomme de Terre Lake, also known as "Gem of the Ozarks," is within walking distance. It is 12.36 square miles in area, with a shoreline of 113 miles, and is known for its superb fishing and recreational opportunities. State Parks and private marinas around its shoreline offer swimming beaches, launching areas, boat rentals, and more. The closest official swimming spot is Wheatland Park, about 3 miles from the cottage. But really, you can jump in about anywhere!

There are several hiking trails in the area if hiking is your passion (or you just want to take a nice walk). One is in the area between the two main "arms" of the lake, one originates right in the town of Wheatland, and our favorite starts in Outlet Park, where the lake becomes the river. All are lovely.

Pomme de Terre River, which flows out of the dam that forms the lake, is a serene, and absolutely gorgeous place to float in a kayak or canoe. For more information on how to arrange a float trip, just ask your host!

Lucas Oil Speedway is one of the premier dirt-track racing venues in the country, and hosts the "Show-Me 100" each May, as well as the popular drag boat racing events in June and September, in addition to the weekly racing. The track has recently completed additional facilities for off-road truck racing events and boasts a go-cart track that is open during racing events. It is a big-time, incredible facility!

Flea markets and thrift stores abound in the area, if shopping for bargains is your passion. We can tell you where they are and how to get there.

Quite a few restaurants make their home around the lake area, such as The Harbor (outside eating area right on the lake shore), 254 Cafe, The Crappie Hole, and several others - more complete list provided upon check-in. (Be aware that most restaurants allow smoking. The exceptions are Our Kitchen Table in Weaubleau and Home Town Diner in Hermitage.) There is also a bowling alley near Nemo, about a 15-minute drive to the east side of the lake. Bolivar, a 30-minute drive down Hwy 83 to the south, offers a variety of excellent dining choices. (Some of those in the lake vicinity are seasonal and/or keep odd days & hours, so best to call first.)

If you prefer a more action-packed vacation, we are about a 45-minute drive from Camdenton and busy Lake of the Ozarks. Miniature golf, water park, go-cart track, lake cruises, and many more activities abound!

I am a child of the living God, wife, mother (5 amazing grown children and 1 fun-loving step-daughter), Gramsie, friend, musician, song-writer, artist (of sorts) painter, decorator, crafter, gardener, cook, office manager, dog-owner, and many other things! My mother taught me to never settle for mediocrity, but to strive for excellence in all things, and to always leave a place better for my having been there. My father taught me to live a life of integrity and the value of wise investments. I am blessed beyond measure! My husband (an avid golfer), and I were drawn to this area a few years ago, eventually bought property and built our home, which we moved into in June of 2015. I love creating peaceful, pleasant spaces, and find gratification in combining the beautiful with the functional. The best part of my education came from traveling fairly extensively, to places like Russia, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel (and others) ~ Never part of a tour group, but just as a person exploring other regions. I'd rather get to know the local folks of a new place than stay in a 5-star hotel in the capital city. The rest of my education was filled in by earning a BA degree in psychology and sociology at the age of 57. I also obtained a Biblical Studies Certificate while at the university. Music has always been a part of my life, with guitar and dulcimer currently being my favorite instruments. My goal is to live a life that honors the Father in all things (1 Corinthians 10:31). I have yet to reach that goal, but I strive every day! If I can somehow be a blessing to our guests, I am honored.
