Nothing disappoints us more than a dissatisfied guest, so please, please do a bit of research before you rent the Valentine Cottage. We try our best to see that the Valentine Cottage is the best value in Mount Gretna, but it has its limitations.
1. Clearly, this particular guest should have done more homework about Mount Gretna before she chose it as a vacation destination.
2. There is a picture of the kitchen (and the refrigerator) in the listing. She should have known about the size limitation before she rented the cottage. The refrigerator is small, but it does have a small freezer, and we do provide an ice tray in the cupboard. We don't prepare ice ahead, mostly because old ice sitting around in a fridge can get gross. In Mount Gretna, people who want ice cream go to the Jigger Shop (walking distance from the cottage).
3. There is, in fact, seating for 5 on the porch. There are 3 Adirondack style chairs and a swing that seats two. There are also 5 cushions. While the dining table does seat 4, it opens up easily, and there are additional chairs around the cottage (bedrooms and living room) that can be easily used for a fifth dining chair. Again, there is a very clear picture of the dining room in the listing, so this is something this guest should have known before she rented.
4.The cottages in Mount Gretna are 100 years old. The area is a pine grove with humid summers. I don't see how anyone can expect to rent one of these cottages without experiencing some mustiness. As other reviewers have noted, we are very vigilant about keeping the cottage clean. In the beginning of the season we literally scrub every floor, wall and ceiling with bleach. Not sure what else we can do but disclose everything, and you decide.
5. This is Mount Gretna. It's not the Atlantic City boardwalk. Mostly, people come here to sit on the porch and read a book, or take long walks in the woods. I think AirBNB is great, but some of our first time guests are looking at the map and thinking they can use this as a place to stay with the kids while visiting Hersheypark, etc. It's not that kind of place, and if you are looking for that kind of place, you will not be happy here.
