The oldest part of our house dates from the eighteenth century. It is in the conservation area of Chiswell and was originally part of the ecclesiastical settlement of the United Reformed Church. It has been recently restored and renovated and combines character with contemporary fittings - power showers and underfloor heating. It meets all current building regulations.

Chiswell is the oldest settlement on Portland - the old stone houses and steep streets that are the conservation area grew up around Chesil cove in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Overlooking the sea and west facing, many of the houses have spectacular views across the bay to the fleet and on towards charmouth in the distance.

Portland is a tombolo, an island connected to the mainland by a long shingle spit. It has a raw and rocky terrain of monumental escarpments rising from a vast and glistening sea below....the coastal path is spectacular and takes you through old open cast quarries which are now protected sites of special scientific interest - full of wild flowers and butterflies. Portland stone is everywhere, in the walls of the old field system, abandoned ancient blocks scattered on the ground, carved and beautiful in the sculpture park, on gravestones in the churchyards and in the buildings, from Georgian churches to humble cottages.

Chiswell is on the western side of the island. It is in part, a working village - still dominated by the ever present sea crashing along the eighteen mile stretch of Chesil beach on its doorstep. There are sea views at every turn, from the high street to the shoreline, where locals and guests alike walk the promenade on summer evenings to watch the sun go down or huddle in macintoshes, braced against the wind, enthralled by the power of the sea pounding the shingle on a stormy day.

The few remaining fishermen still take their wooden boats out from the beach to set the lobster pots each morning and when there are mackerel or bass in the bay, they set their camp fires and sit out like a string of lanterns overnight. Teenagers surf the waves and on calm evenings families picnic after school under the sea wall, swim and paddle in the shallows or build stone stacks along the waterline. It is an unexpectedly eventful place.

Once an island of fishermen, quarrymen and smugglers, with laws and customs quite distinct from the mainland, it remains rich in folklore and rugged in character. Many of the old Portland families still live on the island but it is now also home to artists and artisans, lured by the quality of the light and the vigorous salt air. It is the home of the biennial B-side multimedia arts festival, in September, which celebrates the place and people of this very distinctive island. Given time and space to fall in with the rhythm of this ancient landscape you may feel the tug of its peculiar and enigmatic charm.
