"Why Litchfield County Connecticut Is Catching Up to the Catskills as the Perfect Weekend Getaway"
With its well-known hippie towns, stunning mountain vistas, and variety of cool-kid outposts, New York’s Catskill region gets plenty of well-deserved accolades—and, of course, plenty of visitors. But for those looking for a city escape that’s just a tad less buzzy, there’s an equally impressive and just as easy to get to option on the other side of the Hudson River: Connecticut’s Litchfield County.

Long a popular country retreat for NYC finance types, the area—which includes the picturesque towns of New Preston, Kent, New Milford, Litchfield, Bantam, and Washington—has recently become a favorite for creatives looking to recharge, too. “There’s something for everyone: art galleries, outdoor activities, shopping, great food,” explains Cheri Bowen, a talent manager at The Society Management, who purchased a weekend home in the county earlier this year. “With its covered bridges, forests, and rivers, the scenery is gorgeous. In fact, every season challenges the next for which is more beautiful. The leaves this fall have been taking my breath away.”

Connecticut has the longest fall foliage season in New England, and since it’s peaking for the next few weeks, there’s never been a better time to plan your own leaf-peeping weekend away. Below, a look at where to stay, shop, and eat should you decide to go. Just be warned that, according to Bowen, there is one tiny downside: “The drive back home when you realize there are five whole days to wait until you get to come back again.”

A Brief History of Milton

This beautiful section of Litchfield, CT was originally settled around 1740. In its earliest days it was known as the “Northwest Section,” but soon was called “Blue Swamp” because of the blue gentian wild flowers that grew beneath the many tamarack trees which flourished in the swampy area. The name Milton was chosen in 1795, probably in honor of John Milton, the English poet.

We are from NYC and needed a weekend get away. We found a home in the historic district of Milton, in the village of Litchfield, Connecticut. I live with my husband, who is originally from Paris, France, and Lu-Lu, our 14 year old rescued calico cat. I enjoy having visitors and sharing this beautiful location with guests. Our home has a separate space above the garage that is quiet, the windows face 100 year old trees, and the room is flooded with light. A perfect place for couples, or a place to run away to-a mini retreat... and in my backyard is the relaxing sound of the Marshepaug River. Ummmm......Paradise! ...life is good.
