We're taking extra care so you feel safe to enjoy a relaxing home from home, so we clean and disinfect the barn ourselves between bookings, at no extra charge. Living next door we’re also on hand with local knowledge and to answer any questions. We’re in an idyllic conservation area with a garden, beautiful view and scenic walks from the house. All you need is provided and the picturesque village of Askham has a great village shop, pub, cafe and a Fish & Chip van visits on Wednesdays!

Die Unterkunft
Lowside Barn dated 1687, is located next to our home in the pretty village of Helton, in the quiet NE corner of the Lake District, half way between Ullswater (5miles) and Haweswater (6m), within easy reach of the M6 (15mins) and an ideal base for exploring the rest of the Lake District.

We provide everything you need to make it a well equipped home from home, in a homely Lakeland country style. Upstairs you'll find: the stylish master bedroom with 5ft 4-poster bed and ensuite bathroom with over-bath shower, basin and toilet; a pretty double bedroom with washbasin and beautiful views across the garden and Lowther Valley; the small third bedroom has full size bunk beds and is ideal for children/teens or 1 adult. We provide Egyptian cotton bedding and towels. Downstairs is a 2nd bathroom with large walk-in shower, toilet and basin.

The cosy beamed living room has a log burner laid ready to light, comfy sofas and dining area. There's an initial supply of logs, with more available on request at £6 a basket. The kitchen has a dishwasher, washer-dryer, fridge-freezer, cooker and microwave. Full central heating and on-demand hot water.

There are many beautiful walks straight from the house: over the fell above our village to see spectacular views of Ullswater and the mountains beyond; along the river below the house to get to Askham (pub, cafe and excellent village shop) or Lowther Castle (where there's an amazing adventure playground and Dan Pearson garden).

Zugang für Gäste
Outside, guests have full use of our pretty lawned garden, with large gas barbecue (gas provided) and garden furniture to relax and enjoy the stunning views across the open countryside. There's plenty of parking space in our courtyard for 2/3 cars. For cyclists, we have secure cycle storage and wash-down space by our outside tap.
Guests with mobility issues, do please note that although there is a shower room and toilet downstairs, all the bedrooms are upstairs. There are also 2 small steps up to the front door.

Weitere wichtige Hinweise
There's a detailed information folder, but the main points to note from it are:

The property has a private septic tank so we remind everyone not to flush anything down the toilets other than loo paper!
We request you please don't wear outdoor shoes in the house, leave them in the hallway.

1. The heating time control is in our house, so do let us know if you'd like us to alter the times for you. You can control the temperature with the thermostat outside the main bedroom.
2. Hot water is on constant, please ask everyone to open bathroom windows for a bit after each shower/bath, to clear the condensation.
3. Recycling: Please see the information folder for a more detailed explanation of what to put in the containers in the sitting room cupboard.
4. Wi-fi: we live in the country, the speed is variable but there is a booster in the property and it’s usually good enough to stream a movie or be able to work from here. It’s efficiency does depend on the number of people using it.

Before you leave, as a precaution to protect us from possible Covid infection and to enable us to begin thorough enhanced cleaning of the property as soon as possible after you leave, we request you do the following before your 10am checkout:

1. Open windows to ventilate each room (except bunk room) and leave the front and back doors wide open.
2. To minimise how much we have to handle your bedding, please completely strip beds, including mattress and pillow covers, keeping bedding in room sets, each inside it's own duvet cover. Put all mattress covers inside the laundry bag left in the main bedroom for the purpose.
Leave all bedding in the sitting room.
3. Load any wet towels, tea-towels, kitchen towel and cloth into the washing machine, but please do not switch it on. Leave any dry or unused towels in a pile on the kitchen floor.
4. Empty all bedroom, bathroom and kitchen bins into the outside dustbin by the parking area.
5. Do load dishwasher with your breakfast things, but don't switch it on, so we can add other items to it.

Thank you for your help with these important safety precautions.

Lage

Helton, Vereinigtes Königreich

Helton is a quiet and picturesque conservation area half way between Ullswater (5m) and Haweswater (6m) and is an ideal base for exploring the rest of the Lake District.
A short walk onto the fell above the village, enjoy panoramic views over Ullswater (3m walk to Pooley Bridge) and the mountains beyond, it's fun to explore the many prehistoric standing stones and the Cockpit stone circle overlooking the lake, left by Helton's Stone Age settlers. There are many footpaths and cycle routes right from the door, cycle hire available a couple of miles away at Lowther Castle.
If you have children to entertain, Lowther Castle is less than an hour's walk along the river from the house and their amazing Lost Castle adventure playground and cafe in the woods behind are always a hit. You can enjoy the return walk through the pretty village of Askham via the Punchbowl Inn, Askham Hall Garden Cafe or the Queen's Head. There's also an excellent village store in Askham stocking a good range of food and drink.
In summer, there's a well kept heated outdoor swimming pool in Askham, open weekends and weekday afternoons through the school holidays.
There are a wide variety of activities and great village pubs either within walking distance or close by. The award winning Askham Hall restaurant, recently awarded a Michelin Star, is only 1.5 miles away!
The nearest supermarkets and shops are in Penrith, 15mins drive.
For keen walkers, Ullswater is only 3 miles away on foot, over the fell above our village, where you can join the Ullswater Way and combine a walk with a ride on one of the Ullswater Steamers. Or you can continue walking along the old 'Roman road' footpath across the fell towards Haweswater, giving access to the 'High Street' range of mountains.

After visiting the Lake District all our lives for outdoor adventures and special family celebrations, Chris and I finally realised our dream of being able to live here in 2015. We have worked hard on Lowside Barn to enhance its original character to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere of calm, in an idyllic setting surrounded by beautiful scenery.......just what we always looked for in a holiday cottage. We have a passion for the outdoors and between us have walked, kayaked or rock-climbed most of what is on our doorstep. We have maps and guides for almost everything....you'll find us knowledgeable and helpful if you need advice! We absolutely love this special quiet corner of the Lakes and keep pinching ourselves that we actually live here! Its wonderful now to have the opportunity to share it with others. Our aim is to do all we can to enable you to have a really memorable experience of Lakeland hospitality and for this to become a special place for you, your family and friends too!

Reviews speak for themselves:
"Thank you for providing such a well equipped and well cared-for place to stay. We were impressed by your care and attention to Covid safety."

"This cottage is within easy reach of the motorway, yet feels a million miles away. Tucked away in a peaceful and picturesque village, you can walk onto the fells from the door or easily drive to the popular Lake District centres. Would definitely recommend both the local walks that are mentioned in the owners' welcome folder. The owners are lovely, welcoming and helpful people full of local advice should you have any questions. We really appreciated their unobtrusive but friendly/helpful presence. The cottage itself is delightful, immaculately clean and very comfortable. A real home from home, if not better! Would definitely book again and will be recommending it (although it's tempting to keep it to ourselves!) Thank you, Claire and Chris, for a really enjoyable break."
